Fantastic post! I appreciate your clear and practical suggestions about using norms while connecting so well to your context with peer coaching. Quoting Richardson you write, “Groups will ‘feel more ownership of the norms if they identify and write their own.'” I find this to be so important and you capture the key concern with creating a relationship with a peer teacher. “Ownership” means that the two people will be more committed to working together and remembering their norms. I think of this when I remember the faculty learning communities where we wrote a covenant/charter together.

Your post makes clear that norms involve both parties and can’t just be created ahead of time. Like you suggest, the creation of norms needs to be as collaborative as the sessions themselves. I like your ideas to do “A check-in at the end of each meeting to determine what worked well and what could be changed for next time.” This could also occur at the start of the following meeting after time to process perhaps? It is also clear that you are thoughtfully considering what at first may seem outside of the norms, but what has an effect on the working relationship, such as student distraction. Well done!

I liked how you mentioned the benefits of the mock coaching sessions and that these skills were useful in all areas of life. Recently, I noticed myself asking “clarifying questions and paraphrasing” during meetings.
I noticed that you referred to customizing norms for you and the collaborative teacher by asking questions such as, “What has worked well for you? and What are things that you felt weren’t necessary about today’s meeting?” It’s more meaningful when the norms are created by the participants. Your suggestions for the norms seem to be a great place to start with a collaborative teacher. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on establishing norms for peer coaching!
